If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the wedding of Lorraine Maria Smith to Hugo Otto Chambon-Röthlisberger is a story that will take a thousand pictures to tell. Lorraine is the daughter of former Saudi Aramco employee Ronald L. and Argiri (Iro) P. Smith, born and raised in Dhahran and later attended TASIS in Switzerland. Hugo is Central Regional Manager for COGNAC FERRAND USA, and Lorraine is Project Controls Lead for Technip E&C USA. Hugo graduated from ESC Clermont with a Masters in Business. She met her future husband in Houston, Texas, where they both work. Their shared love of dance, music and entertaining led them to their eventual relationship.
Set in the picturesque seafront towns of Porto Heli and Agios Emilianos in the Peloponnese region of Greece, the wedding ceremony and venue were planned over four days to allow guests to fully appreciate the surroundings. Lorraine selected this location for its natural beauty so that she could share it with her many friends and relatives that traveled from around the globe to attend.

The Chambon-Röthlisberger family, parents Martine and John Noel, relatives and friends mainly from Lyon, France and Switzerland, were greeted by Ron and Iro at their residence in Glyfada, Greece and treated to brunch before traveling and sightseeing en route to Porto Heli. The route passed across the Isthmus at Korinthos, then passing near the famous Epidavros amphitheater, onward through mountain terrain, olive tree orchards and pastures, and finally into the natural harbor town of Porto Heli. Early guests were treated to an impromptu typical Greek dinner prepared by Iro’s aunt, cousin and sister-in-law, and served on the Smith’s Porto Heli residence balcony overlooking the harbor and sea.

The first event of the ceremony was a day long boat trip to the islands of Hydra and Spetses. Capitana (AA) Iro spoke to the guests en route about the significance of these 2 islands during the fight for Greece’s independence in 1821, local culture and sights to see. On Spetses, we saw Lorraine’s sister Christine’s art display at the leading hotel Poseidonion, where she is curating a summer long art festival devoted to a sailing theme following the yacht racing activities in June. The boat trip provided great photo opportunities of the scenery, guests dancing, calligraphy being performed by artist/guest Abderrazak Hamouda, and abstract painting by artist/guest Abbas Musawi. Lorraine and Hugo entertained their friends on the boat bow, while Ron and Iro showed off their Greek and Arabic dance steps. An added treat were the pods of dolphins that joined our boat surfing in the bow and aft wakes.

The second day’s event was an evening of traditional songs, music and dance hosted in front of Christine’s Blue Fig Art Gallery and Iro’s Nail Bar and Spa. Soloist Anna Tsoukala and band provided songs across all themes. Iro started the evening’s dancing with a traditional routine, but soon had all guests on the floor whether they knew any steps or not. Under the clear cool evening sky, the new couple, parents and guests danced until early morning.

Wedding Day – You saw the movie, and the hotel’s bridal suite was again the setting for another Greek bride’s wedding day preparations. To the music and singing of an accordionist and her cousin Sofia Kakoulidou, percussionist graduate from Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Lorraine was attended to by hair stylists, make-up artists, photographer, mother, sister, aunts and cousins, brides maids and friends. The Bride’s maids, sister Christine, and long time friend Stephanie Zirgulis, and cousins dressed Lorraine in her gown. Next, mother Iro gave her chandelier earrings, then her father Ron came in last to complete the traditional style dressing by putting her wedding shoes on under her beautiful flowing wedding gown.
Once the setting was perfect, the Bride’s procession departed and headed to the small chapel built on the hilltop overlooking the sea in Agios Emilianos. To the beat of cousin Sofia’s drum, and on the arm of her father, Lorraine climbed the steps to be met by her future husband Hugo and the crowd of guests. Hugo’s Best Men were Lorraine’s brother Andreas and Hugo’s Houston based friend Nicolas Rusch. The service was presided over by the local priest and an American priest that performed the ceremony in Greek, English and French.

Not even the July heat and humidity could alter the picture perfect setting, with even a break in the clouds to allow for the setting red rays of the fading sun to glow down on the young couple as they exchanged rings. The best man and woman helped the couple by crossing their wedding hoops three times on their heads, then around the alter three times as well. To this, the crowd showered them with rice with each cycle around the alter. Following the ceremony, and signatures by the witnesses to the marriage, the guests departed to the reception that was next.
The Reception followed, and the DJ played until sunrise!
On arrival at Epavlis, a classic restaurant sitting on a small cliff overlooking the sea, the guests were welcomed by cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while waiting for the wedding couple to arrive. On arrival, vocal soloist Julie Massino serenaded the young couple for their first dance as newlyweds.
While the first course was being prepared for service, boarding school best friend and Berlin-based fashion designer Patricia Schmidt presented a video from Lorraine’s best friends that profiled her life and relationship with Hugo.
What followed were very touching and emotional speeches from Bride’s Maid Stephanie, brother and Best Man Andreas, and grooms man Nicolas Rusch.
Dinner and dancing were paused just long enough to allow for a performance of Tango and traditional dancers, then a magical belly dancer that got the whole crowd involved. A speech by Iro, then Ron’s Greek/French (read by Christine) & English speech about the responsibility to the new couple of the ceremony’s witnesses, i.e. all our guests, was followed by the emotional Father Daughter dance. Lorraine and Hugo then cut their wedding cake, and fireworks set the sky on fire. By now the crowd was all too ready to dance the night away, and dancing once again picked up the pace as the night went on until finally sunrise and the last bus headed the last revelers back to their hotels.
Day Four – the BBQ
Bused back to Epavlis by mid-afternoon of the fourth day, guests were greeted with perfect beach weather and nine roasting lambs on the spit. The setting, a much more relaxed and casual theme, provided another great day for eating, dancing, singing and some well deserved swimming. Finally, the bride’s bouquet tossing went straight into the hands of her Bride’s Maid Stephanie!
As sleepless dancers and exhausted legs made their final (or not quite yet for some!) trip back to the hotels for parting photographs with friends, the ceremony was deeply etched into everyone’s memory. And that little spot in Greece will hopefully welcome back many times again those that traveled so far for Lorraine and Hugo’s big Greek wedding.
